• Whitson Elementary held a special promotion ceremony for their fifth-grade students moving to middle school on Wednesday, May 28.
• Apart from Whitson, other Topeka Public Schools also held similar ceremonies for their students moving to the next stage of education.

Topeka Public Schools held several special promotion ceremonies for their fifth-grade students moving on to middle school on Wednesday, May 28, including Whitson Elementary. Approximately 60 fifth-grade students from Whitson received their promotion certificates on Wednesday, while several friends and family cheered on their success.

“We have several staff members who come to the assembly,” said Whitson Elementary Principal Keelin Pierce. “We have several parents who are on staff who come because their child is being promoted today. Our whole Whitson community of fifth-grade families will be here today. I have already seen balloons and flowers, and gifts. You can just feel the excitement and the kids are ready.”

The recent snow days the region experienced over the winter months caused some schools to push back their last few days of school slightly more than usual. Even though they were in school longer than usual, Whitson Elementary Principal Keelin Pierce said they still had fun.

1. Award ceremonies, such as academic presidential awards, citizenship awards, and the Mose J Whitson Award, were held as part of the promotion festivities.
2. Students were also given refreshments, such as food and drinks, during the reception party.

We have tried to do a lot of fun events for the staff and the students, and then this promotion, of course, is another exciting opportunity that we get to do. Even though we are here, May 28, and it’s something the kids have really worked for,” said Pierce.
