The region of Northern Kentucky continues to face numerous challenges, including poverty, housing instability, and a widening gap between the rich and the poor. In the face of these crises, The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky (ESNKY) works tirelessly to provide essential services and support to those in need.
A Home for the Needy
ESNKY, the region’s largest homeless shelter, is committed to providing Life Saving, Life Changing care to its guests. The organization offers a range of services, including food, clothing, and housing assistance. With a focus on supporting the most vulnerable members of the community, ESNKY’s mission is to help those in need to rebuild their lives and achieve stability. The shelter welcomes individuals from all walks of life, including families with young children, seniors, and individuals struggling with addiction or mental health issues. ESNY’s goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment, where guests can receive the support and resources they need to overcome adversity.

The Power of Volunteerism
While ESNY’s services are crucial to supporting the needs of its guests, it is also the dedicated volunteers who make a significant impact. 590 volunteers gave nearly 12,000 hours of their time to ESNKY this past year, a gift valued at over $333,000. These volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and have varying levels of experience, but they share a common commitment to supporting the community. By giving their time, they demonstrate a commitment to compassion and community. • The volunteers at ESNYK were recognized for their exceptional service with awards and accolades presented by the organization. The awards ranged from certificates of appreciation to prestigious accolades, and honored the dedication and commitment of volunteers to the organization.
- The Ralph Drees Impact Award was presented to the Holy Spirit Parish & St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for their work with the Campbell County Cold Shelter project, which provided a temporary haven during extreme winter weather, housing 166 individuals over 28 days.
- The Leroy Collins Award was presented to Michael Dunham, a Shelter Advocate and former ESNKY guest, for his exceptional performance and continual efforts to give back to the organization.
- The Beyond the Call of Duty Award was presented to the Associates of the Congregation of Divine Providence for their dedication to regular meal delivery and bringing joy to the shelter through thoughtful gestures.
